Abortion doctor shot dead in church
Posted by admin in religious nuttery on May 31st, 2009
Breaking news: Kansas abortion doctor shot dead in his church.
As my friend Julia said: “Wait, I thought people against him believe life is sacred and precious… Confused now.”
Lovely to hear the howls of outrage at this murderous act:
“The murderous butcher was gunned down in a righteous act which serves to defend the lives of other innocent children.”
Fuckwits.
Update: Jezebel has an excellent roundup of the response.
Music journos in cockbucket shock

Hm. I might be biting the hand that hasn’t fed me yet but from Metal Hammer’s moist presaging of the Download event:
Right. Of course you’re excited. You’ve got VIP tickets. You won’t be wading knee deep in piss with the plebs will you?
Just sayin’,
Just laugh at them

Been a slow day on the cockbucket front. I had a swim and a sauna so I’m too chilled to really feel the bile.
So instead, let’s have a chuckle. This is a priceless motherlode of stupidity that just made me smile. Thanks to Pedro for the tip:
“No, everyone is born Christian. Only later in life do people choose to stray from Jesus and worship satan instead. Atheists have the greatest “cover” of all, they insist they believe in no god yet most polls done and the latest research indicates that they are actually a different sect of Muslims.”
“I am a bit troubled. I believe my son has a girlfriend, because she left a dirty magazine with men in it under his bed. My son is only 16 and I really don’t think he’s ready to date yet. What’s worse is that he’s sneaking some girl to his room behind my back. I need help, God! I want my son to stop being so secretive!”
A thoughful coda on the Neal’s Yard thingy

Far better balanced and thoughtful than I could manage in the face of such naive stupidity, Herr Doktor Professor Cross sums up the situation nicely. Well done that man.
Trudie Styler: hypocrite

Short and sweet:
Trudie Styler wants to save the world. She flies her entourage with her. She doesn’t think she’s a hypocrite. We do.
Shut up and get lost.
The BNP are twats. Film at 11.

The #bnparetwats meme on Twitter was a glorious meme and raised awareness that the BNP are, whatever they make themselves out to be, a bunch of pathetic, laughable racists. So in that spirit, we bring together some fine BNP cockbucketry from over the internetosphere. Enjoy.
First up, Anton Vowl has three lovely links that involve origami, churnalism and the Daily Mail. The Mail seems to be taking a brave stance and actually going against its readership and arguing against the BNP.
Luckily, Billy the Brit, a standard store-bought puppet is on hand to put you right.
Thanks to goul for the perils of using stock photos. Gotta laugh really.
Finally, with no apparent appreciation of the irony, the BNP have adorned their leaflets with pictures of Spitfires flown by Polish pilots. Just the chaps the BNP want to get rid of. Well, only if they’re fixing your roof of course.
Just remember kids, #thebnparetwats, not just for ridicule.
Neal’s Yard Remedies in customer engagement failure

Ooops. Be very careful when attempting to purvey quackery and engage with an enlightened, educated, skeptical audicence. Much hilarity ensues in the comments.
But before we get too smug at those fluffy unicorns in Covent Garden, take a moment to remember that counterknowledge also carries harm. The trial for manslaughter of the daughter of an Australian homeopath continues. The death penalty is a little stiff, but should one of them get a serious illness, maybe they should eat their own dogfood and be treated homeopathically?
On a lighter note, Counterknowledge reports of homeopathy believers that “…most thought that homeopathic remedies were either moderately or very concentrated.“
The greater evil: the Pope or Oprah?
Posted by admin in religious nuttery on May 23rd, 2009
Or merge the two: Poperah?
I’m sorry for not focusing on the men in dresses enough recently. Oprah is the doughy figurehead of a moneymaking empire that’s only been around a decade or two and hasn’t in the grand scheme of things had much of a chance to fuck things up on a grand scale.
The Catholic church has been around a lot longer and certainly has. The recent blowing up of the Irish children’s home scandal has highlighted the rank hyprocrisy of the men in fancy frocks. The Times has a rather deapan, but spot-on, headline: Archbishop of Westminster attacks atheism but says nothing on child abuse. PZ is slightly less deadpan but no less scathing: Men in fancy hats set their priorities. This cess pit needs to change.
The Catholic church is also shortchanging the Spanish people by some 6 billion Euros a year. Love it.
And finally, the awesomely lovely, well, if she can fall for a gnarly short French guy there’s hope for me, Carla Bruni is also pissed off at the pope about the aforementioned AIDS in Africa thing. You go girl!
The Catholic church has lost all credibility. Go away.

As what can best be described as a “secular Catholic”, I’ve remained untouched (fnarr) by the whole child abuse business. The US wing has had to pay out a metric fuckload in reparations and the Irish church has been similarly roasted. As usual, PZ has scathing commentary on the whole business.
How can anyone in the Catholic church try to hold the moral high ground after this? Never mind that the church’s stance on condoms in Africa is condemning the continent to an AIDS epidemic, complete with one nutjob who reckons European-made condoms are infected with HIV deliberately.
So any religious type who tries to tell you that you can’t have morality without religion, feel free to agree. But it seems that the morality is immorality.
How about REALLY distributing all that wealth and power to the poor and needy, just like that Jesus bloke suggested?
Oprah fails at…everything?

Poor Oprah. She can’t do anything right at the moment.
First up, the wonderfully irritable PZ Meyers has a suggestion for Oprah, regarding the odious anti-vax woman. I especially like the way he quotes Oprah’s missive in comic sans. He modestly quotes his in a simple serifed font, but maybe an olde Victorian Gothic script would be better. Dripping venom. That is only poisonous to the stupids.
Slate has a good swipe at Oprah regarding “bioidentical hormones”, Jenny McCarthey and the exceptionally stupid “The Secret”. It’s worth wading through the free pass rubbish to see what a literate kicking they give her.
Is it time for Oprah to step aside? Or ‘fess up and hire a team of fact-checkers instead.
