Secret Chinese Restaurant Menus: Why?

Interesting question: why do Chinese restaurants have secret menus in Chinese?

Like the article says, if any other ethnicity did this, they’d be staring at a lawsuit; in America at least. And in this day an age, many gweilo love the pukka stuff. Mmmm…chicken feet and crispy intestine.

I’m not that fussed. I usually carry a portable Taiwanese with me anyhow.

If you think it would only get you sued in Murka just you try offering a whites-only menu at a London restaurant!

@Spooke – hell yeah! The eel in honey and black pepper is off-piste at one place whose name escapes me. And all over Chinatown. Sit down with a Chinese and you get an extra menu. Credit to some places, like the New World, when they wheel round the chicken feet and tripe they do look you over to see if you might bite.

@Evil Dave – could it be self-selecting? What would the demographics of a jellied eel shop be?

Oh, and I’ve been to a Sichuan retaurant in Lodon with 50% of the group chinese people and had my head blown off. Went back to the same place and it was suitably tempered for the honkies….much to their relief. Pussies.
